Top Ten Reasons to Bring in the New Year with Your Best Friend Instead of Your Significant Other

Freaking out about New Year’s vacation plans yet?

Begin. It’s December 3rd.

I started panicking awhile ago, yet still haven’t accomplished anything. My inability to achieve a stable relationship over the summer means I’ll be welcoming the New Year with my best friend instead of a boyfriend. Don’t worry, I’m excited about it. Below are my top ten reasons why even if you are in ‘twu wuv’ (mocking single person way of saying ‘true love’) celebrating with friends is the better thing to do.

1. Planning in advance with the boyfriend/girlfriend you’re ga ga over with now is always a risky move. That’s my nice way of saying you might hate them by Christmas.

2. No pressure to choreograph the perfect New Year’s kiss or welcome 2009 with off-the-charts New Year’s sex. Anything that’s hyped up as a special occasion is always an opportunity for let down and consequential fights.

3. You’ll start 2009 alone with a fresh perspective instead of stale relationship baggage.

4. Finding someone to kiss on New Year’s is never a problem. It’s probably the best day of the year to be single.

5. If you’re pissed about the Christmas presents your significant other forked over, you can stop pretending you like them.

6. Conflicting friends groups are no longer a problem (the whole partying with his friends vs. your friends dilemma).

7. Opportunity to meet a foreign/exotic lover

8. If your New Years is bad, you can shake it off and laugh instead of making it about your ‘relationship.’

9. No need to deal with potential in-laws (shudder). There’ll be enough family obligation-bound New Year’s in your married future.

10. You can pack less because you and your best friend can share clothes.
