My Morning Routine

Pretty much all my life I’ve been getting sh*t for taking so long to get ready in the mornings  for work (and pretty much any other time I’m getting ready to go somewhere) and I’m sick and tired of it for several reasons:

  1. I’m still always early and usually the first to arrive wherever I’m headed
  2. It takes time to look as good as I do
  3. People should mind their own damn business. Who cares how long it takes me to get ready to go out? Let me live my life!

I’m a woman (obviously) and women usually take longer than men to get ready in the mornings and me, being the girly-girl that I am, can take longer than most to get ready. Boyfriend, for example, has a hard time understanding this. I wake up at 6:15 most mornings, I wake him at 7 and we are both out the door at 8. He’ll often become incredulous as he emerges from the bathroom bathed, clean-shaven and dressed, only to find me walking around with my towel still wrapped around me.

So I’ve taken to my blog today to defend myself. Here’s a typical morning in the Subway Gal apartmenthold (new word - like “household”):

  • 6:15 a.m. - Wake up, check blackberry, feed kitties, prepare coffee in coffee maker
  • 6:25-6:50 - Shower. This, in my opinion, is the biggest time-sucker. I take a while in the shower because I have a ton of hair on my head. It’s true. I have mid-length, thick, curly hair and it takes longer than say, a man with a buzz cut, to properly wash the beast. Also, sometimes I have to shave my legs, and there’s another 5-10 minutes right there. Men, and some women, don’t have to deal with that. And you might be asking yourself, why don’t you just not shave? I know that’s ok for some women, but that’s just now how I roll.
  • 6:55-7:30 - Make hair presentable for day, pour coffee, give kitties snacks, wake Boyfriend, make bed, turn on “Mike & Mike” on ESPN2, apply makeup
  • 7:30-8:00 - Get dressed, brush teeth, take out cat litter

In my opinion, that’s a lot to accomplish in under two hours! In fact, I think it’s pretty damn impressive, dontcha think? It’s not as if I’m walking around picking my nose,  or twirling my hair, or sitting down in front of the TV with a few beers. I’m being legitimately productive. I believe that this justifies the time it take me to get ready in the morning.

What about you - Do you think this is a ridiculously long amount of time to get ready in the morning (taking into account everything I accomplish)? Or is it justified because I’m productive while I’m getting ready and almost always come out looking fabulous and (sorta) ready to battle through the day? How long does it take you to get ready?

Um…I don’t care what I look like at work and I eat breakfast at work so I’m like a 15 minutes btw waking and leaving my apt for the day kind of person. I usually shower at night post-workout. Weird. I know.

    i’m stealing this post too…

i take even longer then you…so you are definitely being productive!! and i do about the same routine. it’s the feeding/tending to the pets that hold me up in the morning.

I’m a good hour between getting ready and walking/feeding the pup. But then I get stuck on the computer or happen to turn on a DVRed show and that tacks on another hour. You’re not spending the whole morning primping.
